Scarface caps

Scarface caps

I had been searching for metal key caps for around a year, I tried the zinc caps from Geekhack and was very disappointed with them. They had a poor fit and I didn’t like the shiny finish on them. After asking around I managed to locate an original set of scarface aluminium caps from the KBDmania group buy, very exciting! I bought them and the promptly arrived.

The caps are Closer to Cherry profile and they still fit wonderfully on my Filco, there is a noticeable difference in profile  between the orange modifiers I have purchased from WASDkeyboards and the scarface caps, it’s not too bad but it does bug me.

The keys are certainly heavier which makes the brown switches feel lighter, this isn’t such a bad thing though and I can still feel the small tactile bump that the browns offer. I have tried the caps on a Poker with blues and I really didn’t like the feeling or sound that they produced.

It’s currently summertime and the keys stay lovely and cool, very welcome on a hot day! I haven’t used them in very cold temperatures yet but maybe they will get too cold? The key caps are amazing quality. Each one fitted perfectly and they all sit properly, I need to jiggle a few around but there are none that really stand proud or sit at a funny height.

I have tried to weigh them both at work on cheap postal scales and also at home on some cooking scales, the aluminium R1 keys weighed 7g and 3g respectively which is quite a wide range!

Here are a few more pictures of the keys on my Filco.

Here is the typing test, I have tried to type normally which does involve some bottoming out and to also press the keys as lightly as possible.
